Infracos work together to fix escalators
TWO interim solutions for the MYA escalators have been proposed by LUL and accepted by HMRI.
Based on these solutions, a programme has been establised to temporarily re-instate machines that are still out of service while the long term solution of replacing the top shafts, already underway at Walthamstow Central, is implemented.
The solutions follow intensive analysis by Underground engineers and consultants TWI. Finite Element Analysis and Failure Mode Effect Analysis has enabled an understanding of the original top shaft design and its associated risks to be established. From these an effective mitigation regime based on regular inspection was developed.
The project has seen a different approach being used to find the necessary solutions, says Derrick Fullick, Acting L&E Asset Engineer (BCV). Rather than being solved within an asset group, engineers from several engineering disciplines across all three Infracos have helped to develop and validate ideas. As well as Lifts & Escalators engineers, rolling stock and structural experts have also added their knowledge to ensure the right result.
