Eat this!
Tar eating bugs are on their way to Litherland, Liverpool in a project that aims to regenerate and convert the site from brownfield to green.
Usually in these situations, contaminated soil is excavated and removed. However, this scheme will rely on a softer method called bioremediation a process well-known in the US although little used in the UK. It involves introducing nutrients and air into the soil to encourages the growth of bacteria which thrive on, or eat, the oil and tar.
J Routledge and Sons is carrying out the work with the guidance of scientists at John Moores University. Tesco is funding the Litherland Initiative and once the work is complete, it plans to build a new store on the site.
